Just as many believe that Australia and Tasmania are entirely separate countries, it seems that Sydney, rather than Canberra, is regarded as Australia’s capital city! This is entirely understandable: Sydney is the principal port of entry for most visitors to the country, and is also by far and away the most recognisable Australian city, largely due to its world famous skyline. For the sake of convenience, then, let’s consider Sydney as Australia’s ‘unofficial’ capital (but don’t tell anyone in Canberra)!

With a touch of New York or San Francisco about it when viewed panoramically, Sydney’s sweeping skyline can genuinely be described as beautiful. The natural focal points are the iconic Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, of course. But with a backdrop of Sydney Tower (offering incredible elevated views of the city) nestled into a cluster of gleaming skyscrapers, and a lush green foreground of waterfront parks set against the deep blue of Sydney Harbour, you have one very impressive overall scene.

One of the world’s most liveable cities, Sydney is an exciting, cosmopolitan, multi-cultural destination absolutely packed to bursting with things to see and do. A comprehensive list is neither feasible nor necessary here, but rest assured that your visit to Sydney will be everything you anticipate, and more. World class shopping, dining and nightlife reign in areas such as Darling Harbour and The Rocks, while the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens offer both a peaceful downtown sanctuary and an ideal starting point for your orientation of the city.

No visit to Sydney is complete without sampling the laid-back way of things on and around the legendary beaches close to the city. Consider Cronulla Beach and surfing Mecca Bondi Beach essential for a taste of what makes Sydney such a very agreeable place to live! But if you do feel like escaping the city, there are plenty of magnificent attractions easily accessed from Sydney: you may wish to go wine tasting in the vineyards of Hunter Valley, or perhaps head up to the picturesque Blue Mountains to see the famous Three Sisters rock formations towering over the dramatic verdant valley below. Both excursions are comfortably achieved in one day and there are many other great options besides.
